2 days hike to the Inland Ice - 1 night in standard hut, 1 night in tentIt is said that Greenland is the country of contrasts. The biggest contrast is to be found in the landscape, where the Inland Ice meets the bedrock. There are really good opportunities to experience all this hiking from Glacier Lodge Eqi. The treks start at Glacier Lodge Eqi, and from there we follow the footsteps of Paul-Èmile Victor all the way to the Inland Ice.
The transportation to and from Glacier Lodge Eqi is by boat, which is an excursion by itself. We sail in modern and convenient boats at the excursion to Eqi. The route goes north along the coast passing Bredebugt, the settlement of Oqaatsut and the big fiord system called Pakitsoq, where whales and seals often are seen. Further on through the Ataa Strait, this is surrounded by steep mountains with bird life and waterfalls. Our ice secured boats lie approximately 2 hours in front of the glacier and wait for the ice to calve, while a delicious lunch is served.
At approximately 15:00. the boat will arrive at Port Victor, the ”harbour” at Glacier Lodge Eqi. Only guests spending the night in Glacier Lodge Eqi go ashore, the remaining passengers stay on board. On land the camp guides will lead the way to Glacier Lodge Eqi, situated on the rock approximately 100 m above the water level. Practical information on the area is given in Café Victor and afterwards the guide will show everybody to their huts. The rest of the day could be spent by exploring the area or enjoying the view from the huts.
All stays in Glacier Lodge Eqi includes full board in Café Victor. Wich includes a rich breakfast and dinner buffet, while for lunch you can choose between a lunch buffet or a packed lunch that you can take out on tour. In the cafe, it is possible to buy soft drinks, beer, wine and various spirits or sweets. Enjoy the view over the fjord and glacier while enjoying a delicious meal. We are placing great emphasis on the use of Greenlandic ingredients.
First night’s accommodation is in a hut in Glacier Lodge Eqi.
Next morning the day begins with breakfast at Café Victor. At 08:00 the hike starts to and on the Ice Sheet. A lunch is served on the way. After having left you backpack at Base Camp Eqi, you continue onwards to the ice sheet, to experience this unique world of ice.
After returning to Base Camp Eqi, dinner is served before everybody is ready to hit the sleeping bag in the tents.
Next morning after breakfast, you start the walk back to Glacier Lodge Eqi, so that you are back in time to catch the boat at 15:00. Lunch is enjoyed at Café Victor with your guide to end the tour in the best way.
Our guides are specially trained for these excursions, and they carry safety equipment such as satellite phones, GPS, avalanche sticks, and first aid equipment.
When the level of difficulty for this excursion is demanding, it is not because it requires special training to walk on ice or climbing. The tour are not technically hard, but it is are long day were you have to scale 1000m of altitude and walk 20km, so you have to be in good shape.
The length of the boat trip to and from the glacier can last between 2 - 5 hours each way. It depends on the boat used the given day. The stop in front of the glacier lasts approximately 2 hours.
The landing is not suited for disabled. Glacier Lodge Eqi is situated on the rock approximately 100 m above the sea level. We recommend that all luggage is carried in a rucksack, since the ascent makes it difficult to bring a suitcase.
There is full board in Cafe Victor during the stay; however this does not include beverages. Also note that brought drinks is not to be enjoyed in the cafe, as well as the huts do not have kitchen facilities.
