Excursions at Ilimanaq Lodge

Ilimanaq Glacier Adventure

* Supports smaller, local tour operator

On this trip, we sail south of Ilimanaq to Itilliup Ilua. We are dropped off on the wide sandy, beach, after which we are driven in off-road vehicles through the arctic tundra until we reach the Tasiusaq Fjord system. This place has been a popular hunting area for thousands of years. From here, we sail further deep in between the icebergs to the end of the fjord, where the two glaciers and the ice sheet come into view.

We go ashore, and with a view of the glacier, we eat our lunch pack. Afterwards we hike towards and on the enormous ice sheet.

Please note
The terrain may be uneven. We do not recommend this trip if you have serious back or neck problems.
This excursion departs from and arrives at Ilimanaq. Arrival at Ilimanaq is approx. at 16:30 – 1.5 hours after the shuttle to Ilulissat has left. If you are not going to spend the night at Ilimanaq Lodge afterwards, please remember to book this tour seperately and not as an add on. That way you can asily add on the correct boat shuttle back to Ilulissat.
Lunch pack, coffee and tea is included.
The boat trip is done in an open boat with a reinforced hull to handle the ice safely.
All particpants must be at least 12 years old.
The tour runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Settlement walk

* Supports smaller, local tour operator

The settlement walk is an essential part of any stay at Ilimanaq Lodge.

Here we learn about the rich history and cultures that surround the settlement for centuries.

And not least, we learn from a local perspective about what it means to live in a tiny Greenlandic settlement at the end of the world. How do you get water and electricity here, where only 50 people live, and where the frost sets in in September and leaves in May? Where do you get food from? What do you do here at work as well as in your free time?

Please note
The tour departs daily.

Tundra HIke

* Supports smaller, local tour operator

Join us on this beautiful hike, going north out of Ilimanaq – up towards the Icefjord.

Throughout the hike, we can enjoy fantastic views of the Disko Bay and the icebergs. If we're lucky we may even spot animals such as arctic foxes, snow hares or musk ox. Depending on the season, there will also be different aromatic herbs and flowers.

The area has been inhabited for several periods, and contains a rich and exciting history. This can be seen in the numerous Inuit graves that are scattered around the landscape.

Your Greenlandic guide will ensure your wellbeing throughout the hike, and explain about the area and history from a personal and local perspective.

Please note
A hot drink is included in this hike.
If you want to bring a lunch sandwich, it can be bought from the reception at Ilimanaq Lodge.
The tour departs daily.

Difficulty Level
1: Easy

An easy tour means that you must be able to walk a few kilometers in slightly hilly terrain. Like taking a walk on paths in the woods, with a little detour every now and then. You must also be mobile enough to be able to board a boat, even if it may sway a little.

2: Moderate

Accessible to anyone with good health, who is used to off-road walking and hiking. When it comes to sledding, we call it moderate, as you may have to get off the sled and walk / run next to it. In addition, you need to have a healthy back as there will be bumps along the way.

3: Challenging

On a challenging hike you must be able to walk up and down steep hills. You may also have to walk on loose rocks and cross streams, and walk on snow/ice. Involves hiking with a backpack. When challenging is used in connection with sledding tours, it is because we expec that you can walk / run after the sledge up hills, if this is needed.

4: Demanding

On a demanding hike we expect you to be in good physical shape. This means that you can hike long distances, maybe during several days, and that you can climb many altimeters during the day. Eg. our hike to the Inland Ice, where 1000 altimeters and 20 km must be climbed in one day. Demanding hikes involve hiking with your own backpack.

Strenuous

Expedition level. Requires considerable effort and perseverance. Only suitable for people in really good physical shape.
