Sustainability
Sustainable holiday at World of Greenland
Sustainability and consideration are central to World of Greenland. As a Greenlandic company with a Greenlandic CVR and as a self-governing company, we are ultimately owned by the Greenlandic people; therefore, all our activities are rooted in the local environment and aim to support and develop Greenland. Our lodges are closely connected to village life, nature and Arctic traditions and convey the story of life and survival in the harsh north.
In these magnificent and remote environments, climate change is evident, and both we and our guests are invited to think and reflect - far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. At the same time, we recognize that the journey to Greenland and the subsequent transport has an environmental footprint that we cannot ignore.
That's why we work hard to make every stay as gentle as possible and to minimize the impact on the vulnerable surroundings. Across operations and guest experience, we implement a number of initiatives that promote responsible behavior, resource awareness and respect for nature and culture in local communities.
Our ambition is to offer authentic experiences that benefit the local community and cause as little impact as possible - for the benefit of both guests, nature and Greenland's future.
Let the memories live on
When you leave Greenland's glittering winter landscape, you not only take unforgettable experiences home with you – you also take a deeper understanding of nature's diversity, fragility and beauty.
We hope that you, as our guest, will let the nature experience sink in. We try to do that ourselves every day, just as we appreciate being allowed to be right here, in the middle of nature and in harmony with nature every day. And we believe that our travel memories can have a lasting meaning, not only for ourselves, but also for those we share them with. When we share our stories, we can also help create a greater understanding of why it is important to preserve such places. Perhaps your experiences can inspire reflection on how we can all take small steps in our everyday lives to live in greater harmony with nature.
Concrete actions that make a difference
We mainly use Greenlandic raw materials.
We do this for the sake of our guests - the good taste will help complete your stay. But we also choose Greenlandic ingredients as often as we can, to reduce the need for transportation to the lodge and at the same time contribute as much as possible to local economic growth.
Accommodation without climate impact
Our igloos are hand-built and made from 100% pressed snow. The snow that lies around us and is natural precipitation. There is no artificial snow made from snow cannons, and no underlying wooden structures like you see in many ice hotels. This is the real deal. Simple and natural.
Our drinking water is natural rainfall
There is no need to transport water all the way to Igloo Lodge when we can get excellent quality drinking water directly from the surroundings. Our drinking water consists of melted snow or water from a remote lake, which is disinfected through heating. As the water is completely natural and has no added chlorine, you will find that it tastes different than many other places. But don't worry - that's only because it is clean and does not need chemicals.
A winter destination that makes a difference
Igloo Lodge is World of Greenland's first winter lodge. The opening of Igloo Lodge has been a major and important step towards a more sustainable tourism development in Disko Bay. Extending the season is one of the most important focus points in Visit Greenland's national tourism strategy, which we at World of Greenland are working purposefully with as a guideline. With the opening of Igloo Lodge, we want to put the spotlight on Greenland's winter tourism and help create more year-round jobs within local tourism.
We are owned by the Greenlandic people
Igloo Lodge and World of Greenland are owned by the Greenlandic Government, and thus ultimately by the Greenlandic people. We are therefore deeply rooted in the local community, and our commitments go beyond normal commercial objectives. All our accounts are publicly available on virk.dk, and any profits are used to reinvest in new, exciting concepts and products that will create a reason to go - to the benefit not only of ourselves, but also of our colleagues in the industry and the local community.
We contribute to local economic growth
Strong partnerships are crucial when it comes to tourism and its development. At World of Greenland, we are very aware that partnerships with other local companies not only contribute to unity, skill development and economic growth locally. It also brings value to our guests, who care about the starting point they set for their trip to Greenland.
All taxes are paid locally
At World of Greenland, all employees pay taxes locally - regardless of nationality and regardless of the length of employment.
We have marked paths and hiking routes in the area.
Greenland's nature is vulnerable and slowly healing, but a sustainable holiday and wild hiking can still go hand in hand. In addition to having built a nature-protective walkway in the lodge area, we have marked paths and hiking routes in the surrounding nature. We strongly encourage our guests to stay on the marked paths and hiking routes – both for their own safety and to ensure that we leave the least possible footprint on nature.
Our electricity supply comes from green energy
The electricity we use to cook your food, heat water for your tea and coffee, cool your white wine and charge your camera so you are ready for the next day's adventure comes mainly from solar cells. So we produce our own energy as green as possible. Should the system fail, we also have an emergency generator that we can turn on to maintain your comfort and safety. In other words, the cold shower at Glacier Lodge Eqi is completely optional.
We fight food waste
We are very aware of the emissions that occur both when sourcing raw materials for Ilimanaq, but also when sending waste back. In a remote village like Ilimanaq, we all benefit most from thinking in terms of unity and recycling. That is why leftovers from the restaurant are given to the village dogs, and products that are close to their expiration date are given to the village residents.
We support the Greenlandic Children's Association
World of Greenland is ISUMASSUISOQ for the Greenlandic Children's Association. ISUMASSUISOQ can best be translated as "one who takes responsibility for others". The purpose of the collaboration is to support the association's work to give Greenlandic children, and thus Greenland, a better future. This is done through summer camps, workshops for children and parents, collaboration on company visits and internships, and by offering all children and young people a childminder in meetings with the authorities.
In addition to sponsoring an annual amount, we also donate 20 DKK per person to the Greenlandic Children's Association when you book a stay at Igloo Lodge.
When you book a stay at Igloo Lodge, you are helping us give our beautiful country and our children a brighter future.
