Hiking at Ilulissat

Hiking in Disko Bay

Welcome to Ilulissat – a hiker's paradise!

Ilulissat, located on the west coast of Greenland, is a spectacular destination for adventurous visitors. One of the best ways to explore this breathtaking area is through hiking tours offered by local operators, but which can also be done on your own.

Disko Bay is known as an exotic, Arctic pearl. Here you will find everything you could want on a hike – the clearest air, the purest and most fragile nature, the largest icebergs, evidence of the older Inuit cultures and fantastic wildlife. In other words, the framework is set for a wealth of unforgettable nature experiences.

There are many exciting hikes in the area near Ilulissat. Hiking is most popular in the summer from June to September, due to the harsh Arctic conditions. However, some of the most popular hiking routes can easily be hiked all year round. We have collected the most popular hikes below.

About us

World of Greenland is a 100% Greenlandic company with deep roots in tourism around Ilulissat. We are part of the Air Greenland Group, which means we are owned by the Greenlandic self-government, and ultimately by the Greenlandic people. We are proud of this, and it commits us to being among the preferred providers to showcase our beautiful country.

World of Greenland does not arrange excursions in Ilulissat, but only from our lodges, which are located outside the city. However, our sister company Arctic Excursions offers a platform that brings together many different local operators in Ilulissat.

We live for 2 things:

  • We want to deliver the most exotic and unique experiences to the discerning and quality-conscious traveler, through a continuous focus on quality, responsibility and sustainable development.
  • We lift Greenland.

We look forward to showing you our beautiful city.

Hiking at Glacier Lodge Eqi

* requires an overnight stay at Glacier Lodge Eqi

Hike to the Ice Sheet

This hike is your only opportunity to hike to the Indand Ice Cap in Disko Bay. The hike is approximately 22 km long and takes most of a day. The hike requires a good level of physical fitness, but you do not need to have any experience walking on ice to participate in the hike.

Hike to the delta

The Delta Hike is a beautiful and manageable 3-hour hike in unspoiled terrain. The hike starts from Glacier Lodge Eqi, and heads south towards a spectacular river delta formed by meltwater from the nearby Ice Sheet.

Hike to the glacial moraine

On this hike you will get up close to the Eqi Glacier, also known as the "Calving Glacier". The hike is approximately 12 km long, and the terrain is flat and forgiving for most of the way. This hike is included if you have purchased a stay at the lodge.

Hiking at Igloo Lodge

* requires an overnight stay in the Igloo Lodge

Snowshoe UNESCO

This snowshoe hike from Igloo Lodge goes over the frozen lake in front of the lodge, and up through a small pass, where we cross the border to UNESCO. The pass opens out onto the Icefjord, and here is the most beautiful viewpoint. The hike lasts about 1.5 hours, and is manageable even for those without experience with snowshoeing.

Walking amongst Giants

From Igloo Lodge we drive by snowmobile to the small parallel community, which is located far away from Ilulissat - here by the frozen fjord the local fishermen stay for the winter. On the sea ice we can walk around between frozen icebergs, while gaining an insight into how fishermen live in modern Greenland.
