Excursions around Glacier Lodge Eqi

Glacier sauna

* Assumes 1 night at Glacier Lodge Eqi

We look forward to welcoming guests to our new sauna in Glacier Lodge Eqi.

The nature of Eqi calls for contemplation and enjoyment, and here the sauna is the obvious choice. Whether it's a heavy rainy day, a retreat after a hike, or an evening session to round off the day, the sauna is a natural first choice.

On the edge of the lodge area with fantastic views of the fjord and the calving glacier, there are now two beautiful saunas – of course with large panoramic windows.

In addition to the sauna, there is an ice-cold outdoor shower where you can rinse yourself in cold, fresh meltwater from the Ice Sheet.

Note

We have two saunas – each with space for 6 people. You may therefore have to share the sauna with other guests.

It is also possible to purchase a private sauna. Please contact World of Greenland if you would like this.

Essential oils will be provided, but there will be no massage therapist. Swimwear or underwear is required.

Hike to the Ice Sheet

* Assumes 2 nights at Glacier Lodge Eqi

Long and incredibly varied hike that offers several landscape types: lush lowlands, windswept highlands, moraines and not least the Ice Sheet with crevasses, streams and glacial wells. We follow Paul-Émile Victor's tracks all the way to the Ice Sheet. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, tracked vehicles with supplies for Paul-Émile Victor's famous Ice Sheet expeditions drove here, and today we can see the remains of their machines and an old cable car. In a beautiful valley with a view of a dead glacier, we enjoy our lunch before hiking over the moraine and into the Ice Sheet. This is the absolute highlight of the trip. Well-rested, we are home late in the day for a well-deserved dinner.

When we write in the difficulty level that the trip is demanding, it is not because it requires special training in walking on ice or climbing. The trip is not technically difficult – but it is a long trip of 25 km, and we climb about 1000 meters in altitude, so you need to be in good shape.

Note

This tour starts in the morning from Eqi. This means that you must have a minimum of two nights at Glacier Lodge Eqi to participate. The tour is not suitable for children under 8 years old.

Hike to the delta

* Assumes 1 night at Glacier Lodge Eqi

This hike takes you to the edge of the delta. We focus on flora and fauna as we pass the French hut and continue out to the impressive Delta. Here the landscape opens up and you get a fantastic view of the delta.

Here the greyish meltwater from the Ice Sheet rushes out into a branching network of small rivers that flow into the bay. We walk on small paths on the cliffs along the coast and keep an eye out for snow hares and arctic foxes, bluebells and moss sedges. And maybe, if we are lucky, we will see the annually returning pair of white-tailed eagles that have nested on the cliff edge somewhere. Both on the way out and back you will also get a beautiful view of the Eqi glacier.

Note

The tour starts from Glacier Lodge Eqi in the afternoon and is approximately 4 km long. The entire tour takes place in mountainous terrain and takes approximately 3 hours. Coffee or tea will be served along the way.

Hike to the glacier moraine

* Assumes 1 night at Glacier Lodge Eqi

This hike is included in your stay at Glacier Lodge Eqi and departs daily.

We leave after breakfast and hike directly towards the breathtaking glacier.

On the way we pass old remains from the expeditions that have taken place in the area. We pass a rushing stream and come past a beautiful lagoon. Out here, only the constant rumble and crash of the glacier breaks the silence.

After a steep climb up to the moraine, we suddenly find ourselves right next to the enormous glacier front. Here we take a well-deserved lunch break while enjoying the view and watching for small pieces of ice falling from the ice wall.

Note

The tour starts from Glacier Lodge Eqi right after breakfast on the day of departure. The hike to the glacial moraine is approximately 12 km long.

The entire trip takes place in mountainous terrain and takes about 5 hours. The terrain is flat most of the way, but the climb up the moraine can be tough. We have lunch and something to drink on the trip.

We are back at the lodge immediately before departure back to Ilulissat.
